FAQ
Can I join for a ride to see what it's like?
Absolutely! We have a great time at our practices and it's a wonderful opportunity to experience a Texas trail ride. Contact Coach Mike or Coach Susan at westlakemtbteam@gmail.com to coordinate a visit. Don't have a bike? Don't let that stop you! We can almost certainly have a bike on hand for you to borrow and can advise you on suitable size and equipment when you're ready to get your own.
Who is eligible to join the team?
Westlake MTB serves 5th-12th graders who live in the Eanes school district. Any student in 5th grade or higher who lives in the Eanes district -- even if he or she attends private school or is homeschooled -- is eligible. Our team is co-ed. We especially need more girls to join!
When is the season? Can I ride and play another sport?
The season officially starts in November and ends around beginning of May. Many of our riders also participate in other sports; as with all activities, you are the best judge as to the amount of practicing necessary to be competent and proficient and to achieve the competitive edge you desire.
How do I keep up with the team events?
Westlake MTB coordinates practices, trail work days, skills clinics, carpools and more through the TeamSnap app.
What does it cost to participate? What equipment do I need?
Your biggest investment will be your bike. You will need 26+" wheels (29" are becoming the standard), disc brakes, and either front or full suspension. Bikes come in many sizes, materials, and options, all of which affect the cost. There are tons of used bikes available that our coaches can help you evaluate.
A suitable helmet is required and the cost will vary based on brand and options.
Additional equipment is recommended, such as full-fingered riding gloves, eye protection, and a quality headlamp since most of our rides during the winter will end after dusk.
Annual team membership is around $200.
Annual NICA fee is $350; this covers NICA national and Texas league membership, athlete insurance, 6 months of mountain bike instruction from licensed coaches, 6 event weekends, specialized programming (GRiT, TTC, Adventure, loaner bikes,...) and discounts from NICA partners.
Scholarships (both team and NICA) and loaner bikes are available. We don't want cost to be an obstacle for anyone who wants to join the team.
